Above & Below
This project involved redesigning a collection of short stories by Lauren Groff, reimagining its visual identity to create a more contemporary and engaging reading experience. The book was retitled Above or Below, with a new cover concept and editorial system developed to reflect the emotional contrast and layered themes within the narratives.
The design focused on clarity, rhythm, and readability, using typography and composition to guide the reader through moments of tension, pause, and reflection. Careful attention was given to hierarchy, spacing, and pacing to enhance immersion while maintaining accessibility across long-form content.
The original text was sourced from the New York Stories collection, while the visual direction explores how editorial design can reshape perception, strengthen storytelling, and create a more memorable and emotionally resonant experience.
This project reflects my interest in translating narrative and concept into structured, user-centered visual systems that balance aesthetics with clarity and function.
