Belonging to the "OTHER"

Interactive Experience

Book Design

The project was exhibited at the CSM Grad Show of 2022, for the physical display, the books were positioned in a table where some materials were available for interaction with a map, which asked "Where have you belonged?" and the audience were invited to add their journeys with coloured threads, leaving their names on small tags and filling an interactive map of belongings. This map integrated the audience to the projects they were about to see, a kind of introduction and also invitation directing their curiosity towards the books called 'Belong' and 'Other'.

‘Belong’ is an exploration of my identity through the places of greatest importance to me, from my birthplace Rio de Janeiro, to London. It’s an archive of my memories and my search of reconnecting with my roots, after spending so much time away from Brazil due to the pandemic. This book captures my identity through the environments in which I lived and how it transformed me. After living four years in London, and meeting people from such diverse backgrounds, I found myself curious to understand their sense of belonging having lived and being influenced by so many different cultures.

'Other' is a collaboratively designed book, sharing the stories of multi-ethnic graduates located in London. Developed through a workshop, a photoshoot and a series of interviews, the book aims to represent each one’s unique identity, through their own voices. This work is especially important to me, as it’s an expansive exploration of my search for what it means to belong somewhere.
